Science Olympiad: Complete Contest Profile

Science Olympiad is unlike any other academic competition on this site. It does not test proficiency in one subject: it tests a team of fifteen students across twenty-three distinct events spanning biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, engineering design, and technology. No team can be elite in all twenty-three. The competition rewards depth of preparation, intelligent roster specialization, and team logistics executed well on a single Saturday.
The two divisions
Science Olympiad runs two divisions:
- Division B: Middle school, grades 6–9 (some states run it as 6–8 only; check your state’s organization). Each team has 15 members.
- Division C: High school, grades 9–12. Same team size; events shift in difficulty and topic emphasis.
Both divisions participate in the same tournament structure (invitational → regional → state → national), but they compete separately. Events rotate annually across both divisions, though not always identically.
The 23-event format
At each tournament, a team of 15 students participates in 23 events. Students are entered in events in groups of 2–3 (no event allows a single student to compete alone; none requires more than three). This means each of the fifteen students competes in roughly four to six events over the course of a competition day.
Events fall into three categories:
- Knowledge tests: Written exams or timed laboratory practicals on a specific science topic (e.g., Disease Detectives, Ecology, Astronomy).
- Engineering builds: Pre-built devices or structures tested for performance during the competition day (e.g., Boomilever, Wright Stuff, Tower).
- Hybrid: Some events combine a written test with a device or data analysis component (e.g., Experimental Design, Forensics).
The event list changes every year. Science Olympiad releases the new event list in the fall, and teams must adapt their preparation. Events from prior years sometimes return; new events are introduced regularly. The rotating event list prevents any team from simply repeating last year’s approach.
Tournament structure and season
The season typically proceeds as follows:
- Fall/winter invitationals: Many tournaments are organized by other school teams or universities. These are not official Science Olympiad events but are widely used for practice. Competition day format is identical to official tournaments.
- Regional/invitational tournaments: Official events run by regional Science Olympiad organizations, typically January through February.
- State Tournament: Held in spring (dates vary by state, typically February through April). Top teams from regionals advance.
- National Tournament: Held in May at a university host campus, rotating annually. Top teams from each state compete.
How many teams advance from regionals to state varies by state size and the number of registered teams. Check your state Science Olympiad organization website for the advancement structure in your state.
Registration
Schools register with their state Science Olympiad organization, which then affiliates with Science Olympiad Inc. at the national level. Registration fees are paid at the state level; amounts vary. The national organization does not charge a separate fee beyond what the state collects.
State registration windows vary considerably — some states open registration in August or September; others wait until October or November. Check your state’s website in September to confirm the window.
Homeschool teams participate in most states, though the rules vary. Contact your state organization to confirm eligibility and registration procedures for homeschool participants.
Building a competitive team
Strong Science Olympiad teams develop by identifying which students are strongest in which domains and matching them to the events where they can score best. A team that tries to prepare every student for every event tends to be mediocre across the board. A team with three dedicated astronomy specialists, two dedicated engineering builders, and strong general-science students covering the remaining events will outscore a similarly talented team with less intentional specialization.
The build events require the most lead time. Devices must be designed, tested, and refined over months. Teams that start building in October for a February regional tournament have a meaningful advantage over teams that start in January.
Free preparation resources include past exam questions (released by state organizations and the national organization for most events), Science Olympiad student center resources, and the Scioly.org community, which compiles study guides and practice materials for every event.
Science Olympiad and college applications
State and national Science Olympiad placements are genuine academic credentials. Medaling at a state tournament is a meaningful distinction; placing at the national tournament is notable at highly selective colleges. Even consistent participation over multiple years demonstrates sustained academic commitment in a team context that is different from individual test scores.
